Summer League Race Six – Coniston 10K
Tuesday 30th June saw us all lining up for the 6th round of the East Hull Harriers Summer League – the 10k at Coniston. It was a glorious sunny evening (some might say a little too warm to bother with this running lark) and all the regular Harriers were out in force, joined by the usual friends and rivals from other local clubs as well as some unattached runners.
Personally, Tuesday night still feels like an odd time to race. It’s still something that I associate with early Sunday mornings not mid-week evenings after a crazy day at work. Some weeks though everything comes together … I feel good, I catch my nemesis and I’m happy with the time. Sadly this was not one of those weeks. My legs ached, everyone I set out after sprinted off into the distance and I was a good 2 minutes outside of my handicap time! Happily, I was not alone. The usual gang (I’ll name no names) all looked a little dazed at the finish and only half of them had the excuse of having raced at the weekend.
I confess, I have no idea who won or what their time was. I even forgot to ask my other half how he did (sorry). Anyway, as it so often does when harriers get together, a pint or three in the pub duly followed. And for me that’s the great thing about being in a club. The running is important (we all want to beat our times and catch that person in front) but it’s never just another race … it’s also a good night out with friends. (Katy White)
A Harrier 1,2,3 from Alec Gibson, Mike Hargreaves & Steve Bateson for the men’s podium and Keri Pearson from Sara Rookyard and Corinna Turner on the lady’s.
Julie Barker took her second Handicap prize of the season and with two races left, Bobbi Hadgraft leads the league with 221 points from Anthea Eskrett (199) and Linda Huart (187). (Mike)
