Derwentwater 10 mile road race
The 56th running of this classic race around Derwentwater hosted by Keswick AC, was held in unseasonably warm weather as the temperature on race day reached 17 degrees, the warmest November day in Keswick for 70 years.
The first half of the race is run along the Borrowdale valley, which is undulating in nature, with the second 5 miles including two steep climbs as the course runs beneath Catbells and above the level of the lake, before leveling out for the final mile to the finish at Portinscale.
Mike Jackson and Ken Barnes represented the club, with Tony Payne having to withdraw with an injury sustained in the Haltemprice 10km, and Bev saving her energy for a forthcoming race in Dublin. The still conditions, coupled with the warm temperature made for ideal running conditions as the 435 competitors set off from the Moot hall in the centre of Keswick.
The race was won by Russ Best (New Marske) in a time of 51:53 with the first lady (Jo Zakrzewski of Dumfries Running Club) returning a time of 60:44.
Mike finished 35th, winning the V55 category in a time of 63:15. Ken belied his years when finishing 276th in an outstanding time of 85:07; for a convincing win in the V75 category.
The race was very well organised by Keswick AC and makes for a good weekend away for any one contemplating taking part in the future.
